100% Design Revelations

The Porcel-Thin team had a wonderful four days at 100% Design 2017. Not only was it a wonderful opportunity for us to show off our new porcelain tile collections and “Best UK Porcelain Tile Manufacturer” trophy but it was also an excellent chance to chat to architects and design-aficionados about their interior design (and exterior design) preferences so that we can continue to make Porcel-Thin their go-to brand.

More than that, at this year’s 100% Design, we had a good scout around the showground and found a selection of fabulous creations that are well worth a mention.  From wooden bicycles to levitating beds to innovative shower designs, 100% Design is a place where wonder meets pragmatism and there is most definitely something for everyone.

Stiff competition: Wooden bikes by Materia

Materia wooden racing bicycle

This intriguing marriage of traditional craftsmanship and materials with cutting-edge bike design and components is the creation of cycling and wood enthusiast Lindsay Pearson. The Materia bike range includes men’s and women’s city bikes, the wonderfully nostalgic Cruiser and the rather cool and beautifully detailed Race and Fixed-Gear bikes.

Each model in the Materia collection features a wooden frame beautifully crafted by Lindsay and his team. Choices include walnut, cherry, ash and redwood, all with modern components. The Race and Fixed-Gear bikes feature super-light carbon fibre forks and wheels. Lindsey says, “My bikes are the creation of my love for cycling and handmade furniture but they are certainly designed to be used.” He went on to say, “Materia bikes are used by cycling enthusiasts – Double Olympic World Champion Maris Strombergs has one!”  That said, Lindsay knows of at least once client who has hung their beautiful bike on the wall of their home and who can blame them?

Interior design uprising: Levitating beds by Levitas Design

Floating bed by Levitas Design

The creation of Craig Phillips, a prolific inventor with over 30 products to his name, each levitating bed is made using more than 130ft of aluminium and is designed to hold a maximum weight of 750kg. Guaranteed for 10 years and made in the UK, Levitas Design beds are available in the usual range of standard sizes but bespoke measurements and colours are catered for. Integrated lighting, headboards and floating side tables are all options with a maximum size of 4m or 13ft wide.  Wouldn’t you like to float your way to a sound night’s sleep?  You could create maximum bedroom opulence by teaming one of these sleeping beauties with our beautiful Book Match marble-effect porcelain tiles or luxurious Leviathan large-format tiles.

Chain reaction: Cool furniture for commercial environments by Twin

Funky bicycle chain inspired seat by TWIN

Though this funky, clever, colourful and expertly put together modern furniture is designed to add creative flair to office and commercial environments, much of what twin brothers Tully and Declan Gallagher create would not look out of place in any modern home. Made in the UK, the freestanding meeting both is stylish and packed with technology but our favourite piece was this bench modelled on a bicycle chain.

Fresh approach to showering: Drench Showers

Drench showers displayed their range of black shower screens and doors at 100 Percent Design 2017

Drench, the UK’s newest shower manufacturer, displayed their latest black shower doors and screens. The linear and Deco shower screens – with laser cut overlaid grids – shout industrial chic and are a genuinely refreshing alternative to the trend for minimalist frameless shower enclosures. The products generated a lot of interest and we liked the large art-deco inspired screen paired with the latest black Hansgrohe Axor brassware.  Made in the UK, one of these innovative showers would look urban-cool in a bathroom fitted with our Cemento Structured Concrete Tiles or Tosca Concrete Tile Collection.

Rustic materials meet contemporary design: Due

Contemporary Oak furniture made from reclaimed win barrels by Polish designers DUE

Polish manufacturers of contemporary wooden furniture, Due use a cocktail of old wine barrels, for a lovely red tint to the oak, and reclaimed oak from various sources. The oak exudes the rustic charm and warmth that only reclaimed materials truly achieve and the stark contrast with modern materials and design combine admirably in pieces of furniture that are artistic, interesting and very tactile. We are sure our Rosewood Effect Antibacterial Tiles would complement some of Due’s pieces to perfection.
